Marcus than Antonyus,
And his broþer Aurelyus,
Emperouris and lordis were
Off þe empyre xix. ȝere;
And of Rome the empyre swa
Wes devisit betuix þaim twa,
Bot quhen Aurelyus the dede had tane,
Marcus Antonyus him allane
Held and gouernyt þe empyre.
All Asy oure fra Tarss to Tyre,
Inde and all þe Orient,
And gret part of þe Occident,
He gert pay contributioun.
Bot mony tholit the passioun
Off martyrdome for Cristin fay
Wndyre [him]; ȝit wes he ay
Off gret wit and stabilnes,
For nane mycht ken þat euer he wes,
For ony word or causs hapnyng,
Changeit in his assembling.
With mesour and benignyte
All his landis tretit he;
And all tyme commendit wes
Off worschip, honour, and larges.
His tresoure quhen he dispendit had,
His weschall, þat of gold wes maid,
And all his wiffis heid geire haill,
With mony vther faire jowell,
He gaif his knychtis in þare fe,
In defalt of oþer money;
Na his commonis on na wiss
With taxt na tollis he nane wald supprise,
Bot mare his will wes to releif
Thame þan with sic thingis greif.
