Biddle surrenders note-books
On the eighth of April, 1818, we learn from the
manuscript
minutes of the corporation that
"Mr. Nicholas Biddle
deposited the original journals of Lewis and Clark,
with an account of them and of those journals and
documents which he
was not possessed of." The
deposit consisted of eighteen note-books and
twelve parcels of
loose sheets; of these, thirteen are in red-morocco
covers—
seven by Lewis and six by Clark.[47]
