INVOCATION TO ST. CECILIA.
ON A LADY SINGING.
Descend, O Goddess, from thy sphere,
And listen to a British maid;
A sweeter Sappho warbles here,
Than charm'd of yore the Lesbian shade.
And listen to a British maid;
A sweeter Sappho warbles here,
Than charm'd of yore the Lesbian shade.
Yet not like Sappho's mourns her strain,
Alas! with Love's desponding sigh;
To Delia's beauty bows each swain,
And owns the triumph of her eye.
Alas! with Love's desponding sigh;
To Delia's beauty bows each swain,
And owns the triumph of her eye.
