LEAVES OF ABSENCE

The President proposed and the Board adopted the following resolution

RESOLVED by the Board of Visitors of The Rector and Visitors of the University of Virginia that
the following faculty members be and they are hereby granted leave of absence

Mr. Douglas W. Alden, Professor of French, for the period 1 September 1963 through 30 June 1964,
without pay, to teach at the University of Maryland.

Mr. Francis J. Brooke, III, Associate Professor of German, for one year, effective 1 September
1963, without pay, to accept Internship in Academic Administration by the Ellis L. Phillips
Foundation

Mr. Billy J. Gilpin, Assistant Professor of Engineering Mathematics, for one year, effective
1 September 1963, with half pay, to work toward the Ph. D. degree in applied mathematics at North
Carolina State College.

Mr. Oron J. Hale, Professor of History, for one year, effective 1 September 1963, without pay,
to accept a research appointment in Princeton, New Jersey, at the Institute for Advanced Study

Mr. Thomas T. Hammond, Professor of History, for one semester, effective 1 February 1964, without
pay, to carry out research in Russia under the United States-Soviet exchange agreement

Mr. Edward J. McShane, Professor of Mathematics, for one year, effective 1 September 1963,
without pay, to accept an appointment at the Rockefeller Institute in New York City
