UNIVERSITY SESQUICENTENNIAL, 1969

The President reminded the Board that the 150th anniversary of the founding of the University of Virginia would occur on 25 January 1969. He reported that he had appointed a committee last spring to look into the matter of the Sesquicentennial celebration. This committee which was composed of faculty members, alumni, and a representative of the Board of Visitors, Mr. Hobbs, made a preliminary report to him in June. The President stated that he plans to appoint a general chairman to oversee the planning and conduct of the Sesquicentennial celebration who would have to assist him a number of sub-committees. He stated also that the Sesquicentennial celebration should be a community affair involving alumni, faculty, students, the Thomas Jefferson Memorial Foundation, the Board of Visitors, and officials of the City of Charlottesville and the County of Albemarle.
