GIFT TO TAYLOE MURPHY INSTITUTE BY FIVE ANONYMOUS DIRECTORS OF UNITED
VIRGINIA BANKSHARES' CONSTITUENT BANKS

The following resolution was adopted:

  • WHEREAS on 7 December 1965 five anonymous Directors of United Virginia Bankshares' Constituent Banks contributed $25,000 each to the Tayloe Murphy Institute of the University of Virginia; and
  • WHEREAS these gifts represent a commitment to the future of the Commonwealth by five munificent donors who have high confidence in that future; and
  • WHEREAS these generous gifts, together with a gift of $100,000 received on the same day from the State-Planters Bank of Commerce and Trusts, are a most welcome and substantial addition to the goal of raising $600,000 to match a like sum, given to the University for the Institute by an anonymous donor, and will expedite the day when the Tayloe Murphy Institute can actively begin to pursue its purpose to undertake studies that will include "any area of industrial and commercial development or of public policy that relates to such development" in Virginia;
  • NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED by the Rector and Visitors of the University of Virginia that we accept these gifts with the warmest feelings of gratitude to the five anonymous donors for their magnificent contribution, which will greatly assist the University in matching the anonymous gift of $600,000, and by stimulating other matching gifts will bring nearer the date when the Tayloe Murphy Institute can become an active force for the advancement of the Commonwealth.
