INTENT TO ADDRESS DEFICIENCIES IN FACULTY SALARIES

The following resolution was adopted:

  • WHEREAS, faculty of the highest quality are essential to the University's reputation and academic programs; and
  • WHEREAS, the salaries paid to faculty in several schools of the University have failed to keep pace with peer institutions since the budget cuts experienced in the early 1990s; and
  • WHEREAS, the current salary situation is having a serious effect on the ability of several schools to attract and retain faculty of the highest quality, is threatening the University's ability to retain its ranking at the top of the Nation's public institutions, and is causing severe morale problems;
  • RESOLVED that The Rector and Visitors intend to address demonstrated deficiencies in faculty salaries; and
  • FURTHER RESOLVED that the President be and he is hereby requested to implement a plan to use resources available to the University and the schools to improve measurably the salaries paid to members of the faculty over the period 1996-1999; and
  • FURTHER RESOLVED that it is the intent of the Board of Visitors consistent with Section 23-9.2. of the Code of Virginia, that these improvements in faculty salaries be in addition to and not in lieu of the salary increases that may be authorized by the Commonwealth of Virginia. The President is requested to work with the State Council of Higher Education and the Executive and Legislative branches of state government to find means to assure that this will be the case.
