NAMING OF THE SPANISH HOUSE

The following resolution was adopted:

  • WHEREAS, Fernando Bolivar of Venezuela, nephew and adopted son of Simon Bolivar and an admirer of Thomas Jefferson, was a student at the University of Virginia in 1827, and thus an early exemplar of the strong and historic ties between the University and Hispanic America; and
  • WHEREAS, the University's new Spanish House on Jefferson Park Avenue represents both a continuation and strengthening of these ties as well as an innovative way of teaching Spanish language and culture;
  • RESOLVED that the Spanish House be named Casa Bolivar in honor of Fernando Bolivar.
