RESOLUTION OF THANKS TO THE FAMILY OF EDWARD R. STETTINIUS, JR.
The following resolution was adopted:
- WHEREAS, Edward R. Stettinius, Jr., an alumnus of the University of Virginia, Class of 1924, Secretary of State of the United States from November 1944 to June 1945, and Rector of the University from 9 August 1946 to 16 March 1949, a distinguished leader of industry and of national and international affairs, and a devoted servant of the University of Virginia, died on 31 October 1949 leaving intact the manuscripts which record his career and other materials of great historical value, which material is housed in the University's Alderman Library, with special displays in its Edward R. Stettinius, Jr. Gallery; and
- WHEREAS, the family of Edward R. Stettinius, Jr. has given this material, the Stettinius Papers (including papers of Edward R. Stettinius the elder, also a noted industrialist and public leader) to the University where it will be of inestimable value to scholars of present and future generations;
- NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED by The Rector and Visitors of the University of Virginia that we express to the family of Edward R. Stettinius, Jr. our sincere thanks for their generosity and direct the Secretary to transmit a copy of this resolution to them as a mark of our deep appreciation.
