RETIREMENT OF WOODROW W. WILKERSON FROM THE BOARD

The Rector announced the retirement from the Board of Mr. Woodrow W. Wilkerson, State Superintendent of Public Instruction, effective 27 June 1966, as a result of an act passed by the recent General Assembly of Virginia terminating the membership of the State Superintendent on all governing boards of State-controlled institutions of higher learning, which act will reduce the membership of the Board to 16 members.

As a tribute to Visitor Wilkerson, the following resolution was adopted:

  • WHEREAS the General Assembly of Virginia at its recent session passed an act terminating the membership of the State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Mr. Woodrow W. Wilkerson, on all governing boards of State-controlled institutions of higher learning, and specifically the Board of Visitors of the University of Virginia; and
  • WHEREAS this act will prevent any future participation by Mr. Wilkerson in our deliberations;
  • NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED by the Rector and Visitors of the University of Virginia that we extend to Mr. Wilkerson our grateful thanks for his contributions to our discussions in the past and wish for him many years of continued success in his exacting duties as State Superintendent of Public Instruction and as a member of the State Council of Higher Education.
