NAMING THE BROWN COLLEGE

In proposing the adoption of a resolution naming the Brown College, the President thanked Mr. Brown and the members of his family whose generosity has made this possible. He reminded the Board that four successive generations of the Brown family have been educated at the University and that the family's gift is being made in honor of the first two generations, which began with Mr. Brown's grandfather, Owsley Brown, who matriculated in the College in 1896.

The following resolution was adopted:

  • WHEREAS the Brown family of Kentucky has sent sons and daughters to be educated at the University of Virginia for four generations; and
  • WHEREAS the Brown family has made distinguished contributions to the life of the University since the first Brown matriculated in the College in 1896; and
  • WHEREAS W. L. Lyons Brown, Jr., a member of this Board, and his family have made a substantial gift to the University to endow the residential college on Monroe Hill, the first of the University's residential colleges;
  • THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the residential college on Monroe Hill be named The Brown College in memory of the first four members of the Brown family to study at the University: Owsley Brown, Robinson Brown, William Lee Lyons Brown and George G. Brown;
  • FURTHER the Board of Visitors expresses its gratitude to the Brown family for this most generous gift and notes particularly that this endowment carries forth, in a direct way, the Founder's concept of the University as an academical village.
