ESTABLISHMENT OF THE HOVEY S. DABNEY EMINENT SCHOLAR
PROFESSORSHIP

In proposing the adoption of a resolution creating the Hovey S. Dabney Eminent Scholar Professorship, the President paid tribute to the Rector's many years of devoted service to the University and to his interests in a number of different aspects of University life. The President then recognized members of the Rector's family and some of his business associates who were at the meeting. He thanked Mr. Kenton McCartney, President and Chief Executive Officer of Jefferson Bankshares, Inc., for the Bank's generosity in establishing the Dabney Professorship. The Chair also honors the Rector's service to the Bank and marks his retirement as President and Chief Executive Officer.

The following resolution was adopted:

  • RESOLVED that there is hereby established a Chair to be known as the Hovey S. Dabney Eminent Scholar Professorship, which is to be assigned initially to the Department of Urology and to be occupied by Dr. Jay Y. Gillenwater. After Dr. Gillenwater's retirement from the University, the Chair will be assigned by the President of the University to the school or department that, in the President's judgement, can benefit most from the Chair. The Board is grateful to Jefferson Bankshares, Inc., which made the establishment of this Chair possible.
