HUME, David (1711-1776):
Scottish skeptical philosopher, historian and essayist whose
radical empiricism has had a profound influence on modern thought. KANT claimed that Hume
"awoke" him "from dogmatic slumber" through his A Treaties on
Human Nature (1739). Hume's Dialogues on Natural Religion (1779), which was
published posthumously, is a sustained attack on CHRISTIANITY and attempts to prove the
existence of GOD. In his lesser known work The Natural History of Religion
(1757), he argued that POLYTHEISM was both the natural and original RELIGION of mankind.
