HAKUIN (1685-1768):

the greatest Japanese ZEN master after DOGEN. He led a major religious REVIVAL and laid the foundations for modern Zen. His doctrine can be summed up in terms of a progression through MEDITATION from the Great DOUBT, to the Great ENLIGHTENMENT to the Great JOY.
