REPORT ON ADMISSIONS

The President summarized a report of the Dean of Admissions for September 1972. The report indicated that there was an increase of 1,268 applications over the previous year. Among 82 state universities and land grant colleges, the University received the second largest number of applications for each available place in the first year class. The entering class in the College, Engineering, and Architecture will be composed of 62 percent men and 38 percent women. The College class will have a male-female ratio of 55 to 45 percent. The entering class will consist of 67 percent Virginians. The entering class will be strong academically. Over the past five years matriculants to the College of Arts and Sciences ranked in the top quintile of their high school classes as follows: 56 percent to 62 percent to 65 percent to 74 percent to 81 percent in 1972. Over the past three years the combined mean scholastic aptitude test score has increased by 17 points. The President expressed satisfaction with the level of preparation of the entering class.

Mr. Barrett pointed out that because of court actions, the University may lose the out-of-State category of student. If this should develop, the income of the University might be reduced by 3.8 million dollars.

Mr. Potter expressed the view that legislators should be made aware of the large portions of the endowment which comes from out-of-State alumni.

Mr. Zimmer expressed the view that the enrollment projections to 1980 are the source of considerable concern in the General Assembly. He urged that this be given careful study and that the amount of University costs covered by student tuition and fee charges needs careful analysis.

The report was received by the Board.
