There is a traditional saying: "The extreme of a lack of jên
is to neglect[2] one's parents. The extreme of disloyalty is to rebel

against one's prince. The extreme of untrustworthiness is to cheat
one's friends." Those guilty of these three [crimes] are the ones a
saintly ruler puts to death without mercy. The Ode says,[3]

If a man has no moderation in his behavior,[4]
What should he do but die?
