'Twas nothing more than appropriate
This friend of the old time should relate
Some stories of one whose boyhood-strife
With fortune, in humble, toilsome life,
Had not through the earth or wave foretold
That he would a nation's ruling hold.
And telling of Doric hardships he
By fate beneficent came to see,
'Twas thought that it might not prove unmeet,
The following stanzas to repeat:
