Uprose a person a stranger would
Find hard to study: his garb was good,
His manners civil, his conduct fair,
And yet there was somewhat in his air,
That made one think of the men who roam
At large, with peripatetic home,
Each lodging where he can climb or creep,
To give the world and himself a sleep;
Each dining where he can coax his way,
And eat the most for the least of pay.
This man, half modest and yet half bold,
The following singular story told,
And vowed 'twas true to the core—the while
His wife sat near with quizzical smile:
