Brindle Paces Victory
As Mittmen Whip VMI

By John Markon
Cavalier Daily Staff Writer

Getting in a good tune-up for
today's big game with North
Carolina, the Virginia baseball team
used the pitching of Steve Brindle
and some errant VMI fielding to
down the Keydets 8-2 in action
yesterday at Lambeth Field.

The Cavs pounded starter and
loser Randy Snow for nine hits over
eight innings with Dave Bratt
collecting two singles and driving in
three runs. Snow's support afield
was less than sterling, however, as
Keydet defenders were charged
with five errors and made numerous
other sloppy plays unnoticed by
the official scorer.

Brindle, recovering well after
being knocked from the box early
against North Carolina on Saturday,
went the distance and allowed six
hits. The two VMI runs both came
across with the aid of passed balls,
one in the first and one in the
seventh. Wahoo catchers Sam Beale
and Al Bracht divided the miscues
evenly between themselves.

After Military scored their first
inning run Virginia came back with
two on a bases-loaded single by
Bratt and never lost their lead. Two
more runs were plated in the
second when, after a single by
Terry Dan, Brindle slapped a single
to center and went to third when
Keydet outfielder Lou Dowdy
chipped in with a two-base error.
Brindle later scored on a sacrifice
fly by Robbin Marvin.

Keydet righthander Snow was
effective only when he was able to
get the ball over, within the early
innings was practically never. He
passed five men in the first three
innings, loading the sacks on walks
in the first and yielding a lead off
walk to Mike Cubbage in the third.
Virginia upped its lead to 5-0 in
that third frame when Cubbage
scored on Bratt's second single.

After going scoreless in the
fourth the Cavs pushed across a run
in the fifth when Sammy Beale
singled in between Keydet errors
which allowed Steve Sroba and Jon
Williams to reach base. Billy Hall
drove two more runs in the sixth
with a two-on double. Sroba also
doubled later in the inning but not
before Hall had been retired in a
vain attempt to stretch his
two-bagger into a triple.

The rest of the game was
relatively quiet as the seventh
inning score of 8-2 stood up.
Brindle, after an uncertain start
settled down nicely and showed
good control. Most of the hits
recorded by VMI were of a scratchy
variety. Winner Brindle now claims
a 6-1 record.

Tomorrow's game with North
Carolina should do much to settle
what is now a somewhat uncertain
ACC baseball picture. The Tar
Heels are presently ensconced in
first place and, owing to the
unimpressive performance of
Maryland, may have found
themselves playing the favorite's
role. Virginia, with Sunday's win
over State, is now a firmly
established contender.
