Cavs Climb To Second In Lacrosse Poll

By CLARK EMERSON

The University lacrosse
team garnered the laurels of its
weekend Hero's championship
and climbed one notch in the
national lacrosse poll.

The Cavaliers overtook last
week's kingpin Maryland, who
fell to the reigning NCAA
titleholders Sunday in the
finale of Baltimore's Hero's
Invitational Tournament.

According to official
procedure, the Wahoo victory
should not have influenced the
U.S. Intercollegiate Lacrosse
Association's balloting, but the
nine-judge panel undoubtedly
read the match's writeup.

Last week's Avis, Johns
Hopkins, filled the vacuum left
by the Terp's slide. The Jack
Thomas-led Blue Jays, who
forgo all tournaments except
the nationals in mid-May
overran undermanned Yale,
22-4. Hopkins and Virginia
stage a rematch of last year's
national finals in Baltimore
April 14.

Despite the fact that the
Cavaliers received only three
first place votes as opposed to
Jay's six, the Cavaliers at 174
were only a single point from
the top position. Maryland, the
defending champion, was ten
points down at 164.

Following the triumvirate
were, in order, disciplined
Navy, rising power Washington
& Lee, the Cadets of Army,
Hofstra, physical Towson State
and 1971 NCAA champ
Cornell.

Navy invades Charlottesville
April 21 while Maryland visits
May 5. The Cavaliers meet
Washington & Lee in Lexington
at the season's end.

Far down in the last
position was conference comer
North Carolina with 15 votes.
Non-collegiate teams such as
the Carling Lacrosse Club are
not eligible for rankings.

Besides the top three
shuffle, most of the positions
remained rather stable. Hobart
and Cornell fell to make room
for Hofstra and Towson State,
who jumped from ninth and
thirteenth, respectively.

The other major lacrosse
poll compiled by the Baltimore
Sun called the race for number
one a dead heat. Hopkins and
the University were tied for
first place with 47 votes each;
Maryland's 34 earned it third
position. The Cavaliers were
ranked behind both the Terps
and Jays in last week's Sun
balloting.

The ordering of the Sun
poll was similar to that of the
USILA. The next eight in order
are Navy, Towson State,
Washington & Lee, Hofstra,
Washington College, Cornell
and Hobart. The vote totals
ranged from the Terps' 40 to
Hobart's 6. Washington College
was ranked twelfth in the
USILA rankings.

Prominent action over the
weekend among the nation's
best lacrosse clubs included the
Cavaliers successful Hero's
journey where the Wahoos
revenged an early season loss to
Carling.
