Cavalier Defense
Tops In League

By G. D. ROTHENBERG

The Cavalier basketball
team has distinguished itself
again in the little numbers
game played at ACC
headquarters. The weekly
statistics race has begun and
the Cavaliers are bucking for
some top positions.

Virginia leads the
conference in defense through
games of December 11 with a
measly 66 points allocated to
each opponent.

Unfortunately, the Cavs are
not scoring as often as other
ACC teams and this is
everywhere in evidence in the
offensive statistics. David
Thompson, the N.C. State
flash, is leading the league with
a blistering 33.8 scoring
average. He's shooting field
goals at a .614 percentage and
bucketing free throws at a
league leading 100 per cent, and
he ranks sixth in rebounds.

Tony Byers of Wake Forest
and Tom McMillen of
Maryland are the two other
active ACC hoopsters with over
20 points a game. Barry
Parkhill's 18 points per game
rates eighth spot with Gus
Gerard, not too far behind in
tenth, with a 16.0 tally per
contest.

Most accurate of the
Cavaliers from the field is
Gerard who, in 16th place with
a .431 percentage, is one notch
ahead of Parkhill's .389
average. Leading in this
category are Maryland's super
frosh John Lucas (.667),
top-banana McMillen and
Thompson.

Parkhill is in second place in
free throws with a .923
percentage and is the only
Wahoo in the top 11.

In rebounding, the relatively
tiny Gerard has hauled in the
fifth spot on the totem pole an
11.0 average. UNC's Bobby
Jones, and Maryland's dynamic
duo of Len Elmore and
McMillen are the pace-setters in
this group with 12 caroms or
more each time they take the
floor.

In teams statistics, the
conference-leading Cavs are
fourth in scoring offense with
87.3 points, fourth in rebounds
with 51 even per night and
fourth in scoring margin with a
21.3 point differential.

The field goal figures find
the Wahoos in only fifth place,
despite a respectable .478
shooting percentage from the
field. Meanwhile, on the foul
line, the Cavaliers are only
netting two out of every three
attempts for a sixth place .667
average.
