Winter Tracksters Prep
For Lynchburg Meet

By STEVE GASKE

This afternoon the
University indoor track team
will take an untried team
composed mostly of first-year
men to the Lynchburg
Invitational.

With a field comprised of all
State schools, the Lynchburg
meet is mainly a pre-Christmas
warmup for the big indoor
meets next month.

Coach Lou Onesty said the
team looked good in a practice
meet last week and seemed
optimistic about this meet.

The strongest event for the
Cavaliers is probably the 880,
led by cross country star Phil
Meyer. Jim Wood and Andy
Gehrken are other cross
country veterans that should
add depth to the half mile.

Mr. Onesty was especially
lavish in his praise for first-year
880 man Jerry Hodd, who he
predicted will be "really
good."

Jim McClurg is another
Virginia hopeful in the pole
vault. A good vaulter last year,
McClurg has already gone 14'6"
this year, which is a good
height for this point in the
season.

If Mr. Onesty learns nothing
else from this meet, he should
find out about the future of his
hurdlers for the next few years.
With the absence of star
hurdler Harrison Davis, the
field is left open for a
contingent of first-year men to
show what they can do in
competition. Mike Seeds, Bill
Rockwell, and Doug Gehley
should be the top Cav hurdlers.

Another first-year prospect
is Steve Kertza in the sprints.
Mr. Onesty feels that Kertza
has the speed to give ACC
champ Kent Merritt some help
in the sprints.

Beether Hasey, Tom
Polansky, Gordon Littig, and
Fred Sullohoski make up the
mile relay team, an event that
Virginia won in the ACC
championships last year.
