ESTABLISHMENT OF A NEW DEPARTMENT IN THE SCHOOL OF
MEDICINE: THE DEPARTMENT OF THERAPEUTIC RADIOLOGY AND
ONCOLOGY

  • The following resolution was adopted:
  • WHEREAS there is a demonstrable need in the School of Medicine and the Health Sciences Center for instruction of medical students and physicians in the value and use of radiation in the treatment of cancer, to provide clinical services for the treatment of malignant disease with radiation, and to provide basic and clinical research on the biologic mechanism of radiation effects on normal and malignant tissues and the efficacy of radiation therapy;
  • WHEREAS initial funding of the new department is to be accomplished by reallocation of funds from several Health Sciences Center sources, including funds currently supporting the Division of Radiological Physics;
  • WHEREAS this action is proposed by the Dean of the School of Medicine and supported by the Vice President and Provost for Health Sciences, and the President;
  • NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that there is created within the School of Medicine a Department of Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology. This action is subject to final approval of the State Council of Higher Education of Virginia.
