RESOLUTION TO THE GOVERNOR AND THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE
COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA URGING THE IMMEDIATE DEVELOPMENT
OF AN ADEQUATE COMPETITIVE SALARY STRUCTURE TO ENHANCE THE
RECRUITMENT AND RETENTION OF NURSES FOR THE UNIVERSITY OF
VIRGINIA HOSPITAL

  • The following resolution was unanimously adopted:
  • WHEREAS, The Rector and Visitors of the University of Virginia has repeatedly heard reports of the shortages of nurses in the University of Virginia Hospital from the University administration; and
  • WHEREAS, this shortage often curtails patient care and prevents the acceptance of critically ill patients referred to the Hospital; and
  • WHEREAS, one of the chief reasons for the inability to recruit and retain adequate numbers of nurses is low non-competitive salaries with local community and regional teaching hospitals; and
  • WHEREAS, the number of positions allocated to the University of Virginia Hospital is inadequate to maintain its current programs as well as implement planned expanded and new programs;
  • NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that The Rector and Visitors of the University of Virginia urges the Governor and the General Assembly to make every effort to develop immediately an adequate competitive salary structure to enhance the recruitment and retention of nurses so that optimal nursing care for patients of the Commonwealth may be provided in the University of Virginia Hospital.
