ESTABLISHMENT OF THE OWEN R. CHEATHAM PROFESSORSHIPS IN THE
SCIENCES

The following resolution was adopted:

RESOLVED by The Rector and Visitors of the University of Virginia that a gift of 1,000 shares of Georgia Pacific Corporati stock presented to the University on 12 February 1970 by Mr. Owen R. Cheatham be and it is hereby accepted with profound gratitude, that the income from this gift, and from the contemplated supplementary gifts for the same purpose, be used to establish and maintain in perpetuity professorships of such eminence and distinction as to bring honor and respect to the name of Owen R. Cheatham, with whose name they shall be forever associated;
RESOLVED FURTHER that two Owen R. Cheatham Professorships in the Sciences be and they are hereby established; and that they shall be filled by appropriate elections as soon as the income from the gifts shall be sufficient;
RESOLVED FURTHER that it shall be within the province of the University to select the professors and the departments in which the income is to be used; that the University shall have discretion to make changes from time to time in the selection of the professors and departments;
AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary is hereby directed to transmit to Mr. Owen R. Cheatham a copy of this resolution as evidence both of our corporate and individual gratitude for his wise and farseeing investment in great teaching and scholarship and of our commitment to the purposes of his grant.
