NAMING OF THE EMILY COURIC CLINICAL CANCER CENTER

WHEREAS, The Honorable Emily Couric represented Charlottesville and Albemarle County, and adjacent areas, in the Virginia Senate and was both an extremely effective legislator and a leader of statewide importance, as well as a supporter of the University; and

WHEREAS, Senator Couric was a tireless advocate of cancer research; and

WHEREAS, Senator Couric died of cancer in 2001; and

WHEREAS, the Ivy Foundation has made a generous gift toward the construction of the Clinical Cancer Center, a number of friends of Senator Couric and supporters of cancer research at the University have given funds, and the Governor and the General Assembly have made a generous appropriation;

RESOLVED, the Board of Visitors names the Clinical Cancer Center the Emily Couric Clinical Cancer Center, pays tribute to Senator Couric's memory, and thanks the Ivy Foundation and other generous contributors, as well as the Governor and General Assembly of Virginia, for the support which has made the construction of the Clinical Cancer Center possible.
