APPROVAL OF THE RENAMING OF THE PERRY FOUNDATION COURTS

The the following resolution was adopted:

  • WHEREAS, Junius Rodes Fishburne was born in Albemarle County in 1915 and died in Charlottesville in 1991; and
  • WHEREAS, Mr. Fishburne was a member of a family distinguished for many generations for its contributions to the life of Charlottesville and Albemarle County; and
  • WHEREAS, Mr. Fishburne took both his Bachelor's and Law degrees from the University, having been Chairman of the Honor Committee, and Captain of the Tennis Team, among many other activities; and

  • WHEREAS, Mr. Fishburne continued his active involvement in his community after he finished the University, serving as Chairman of the Charlottesville School Board, President of the Charlottesville-Albemarle Chamber of Commerce, and member of the boards of the Perry Foundation, the Thomas Jefferson Memorial Association, the Blue Ridge School and the Miller School; and
  • WHEREAS, the University Hall tennis courts were a gift to the University from the Perry Foundation in 1971 and were accordingly named the Perry Foundation Courts;
  • RESOLVED that the Perry Foundation Courts be renamed the Perry-Fishburne Courts to acknowledge both the generosity of the Perry Foundation and the contributions of Junius Rodes Fishburne.
