APPROVAL OF THE NAMING OF THE NEW RESIDENCE HALL

The following resolution was adopted:

  • WHEREAS, Irby Bruce Cauthen, Jr., was born in South Carolina on August 24, 1919; and

  • 5167

  • WHEREAS, Mr. Cauthen took the Master of Arts and the Doctor of Philosophy in English from the University of Virginia; and
  • WHEREAS, Mr. Cauthen joined the faculty as Assistant Professor of English in 1954 and became Professor of English in 1964; and
  • WHEREAS, Mr. Cauthen served as Assistant Dean, Associate Dean and finally Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences from 1962 to 1978; and
  • WHEREAS, Mr. Cauthen retired from the faculty in 1987 and was then elected Professor Emeritus by this Board; and
  • WHEREAS, Mr. Cauthen died on May 27, 1994; and
  • WHEREAS, Mr. Cauthen served the University with enormous distinction, remembered by his students as a superb teacher and by colleagues for his scholarship and his abilities as an administrator;
  • RESOLVED that the new residence hall on Alderman Road be named Cauthen House in honor of Irby Bruce Cauthen, Jr.
