DEVELOPMENT OF A UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA MANAGED HEALTH
CARE PROGRAM

  • The following resolution was adopted:
  • WHEREAS managed care is an increasingly important method of health care delivery and financing in the United States and Virginia; and
  • WHEREAS the University of Virginia Schools of Medicine and Nursing must provide training opportunities in managed care settings to prepare adequately future physicians and nurses; and
  • WHEREAS the University of Virginia Medical Center and its physicians face financial risk that will undermine significantly their ability to support medical education and indigent care if they do not respond to managed care developments in our region; and

  • WHEREAS in House Joint Resolution 623, the General Assembly has requested that each state teaching hospital develop long-term policy options for its role in the delivery of indigent care and medical education in an increasingly managed health care environment; and
  • WHEREAS the University of Virginia Board of Visitors has resolved that the Health Sciences Center should explore collaborative opportunities, including the development of a regional health care system, with other physicians, health care provider institutions, and other appropriate groups with the goal of enhancing the health and managing health care costs for the citizens in our region;
  • NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the University of Virginia Medical Center and University of Virginia Health Services Foundation are requested to develop a managed care program subject to subsequent review by the Board of Visitors, that addresses the educational and financial needs of the University of Virginia Health Sciences Center, responds to the health care needs of the citizens of our region, and will support developments in the regional health care delivery system.
