APPROVAL OF PROPOSED POLICY ON SIGNAGE IN ATHLETIC FACILITIES

  • The following resolution was adopted:
  • RESOLVED that the following policy on signage in athletic facilities be and it is hereby approved.

POLICY

It is the policy of the University of Virginia to permit the recognition of corporate or commercial support of its athletic programs through the use of appropriate and distinctive permanent signage on the exterior or interior of its athletic facilities. Temporary signs, banners, and/or messages displayed on electronic scoreboards shall be governed by a separate policy and a separate set of standards under the jurisdiction of the Director of Athletic Programs.

STANDARDS

  • Signage, in or on athletic facilities, and proposed under the terms of this Policy, shall conform to the following standards:
  • 1. Permanent signs located on the exterior of an athletic facility must comply with the standards described in the University's Signage Manual.
  • 2. Permanent signs located in the interior of an athletic facility will be governed as follows:
  • a. Illumination may be used only while the athletic facility is in use for an event.
  • b. The message on a sign may include a business firm's name and other identifying marks or slogans but should not make or imply comparisons with competing products or services.
  • c. The name or symbols of the University of Virginia should not be located on a sign in a way so as to imply endorsement of a business firm, its products, or its services.
  • d. Signs displaying a firm's identifying mark or slogan as well as standard commercial advertising signs may be located only on or in conjunction with the concession areas and scoreboard or scoreboards of the athletic facility.
  • e. Except as provided elsewhere in this policy (see paragraphs 2a-2d above) signs located in the interior of an athletic facility must conform in lettering, style, color, and brevity of message, with the standards reported in the University's Signage Manual.

JURISDICTION

The University's Graphics Committee shall review all signs proposed under the terms of this Policy for conformance with the standards listed above and may make, as its membership deems appropriate, suggestions for changes to those standards.

The role of the Graphics Committee does not include jurisdiction over the messages displayed on signs described in paragraph 2 of the above Policy. Messages on permanent signs located in the interior of an athletic facility shall be reviewed for their "appropriateness" by a committee to be made up of one representative each of the Chief Academic Officer, the Vice President for Development, and the Vice President for Administration.
