Summer Work in Biology.

In connection with the Summer School of Medicine there will be
given, in the Biological Laboratory of the University, a course upon
Normal Histology and Bacteriology comprising three lectures a week
with accompanying laboratory exercises. Under the former head will
be discussed and demonstrated the structural elements of the body,
and their groupings into tissues and organs; under the latter the
nature and characteristics of the bacteria, the methods of their detection,
isolation and culture, and the principles of disinfection and antiseptic
treatment. The resources of the laboratory for this work are
unsurpassed in the South. The terms for this course are stated in the
circular of the Summer School of Medicine.

Special courses will also be offered as follows: In Histological
Technique, open to students pursuing the course above referred to, or
to those who have pursued a similar course here or elsewhere; including
practice in the fixation and hardening of tissues and the cutting
and staining of sections; in drawing and photographing from the
microscope; and in the special manipulation of the microscope in connection
with the use of the highest powers; demonstration will also be
made of the embryological development of the tissues, and of the special
technique connected therewith. In Zoology, including three lectures
a week (for the term specified below) upon the structure, life history,
and affinities of selected representative forms of animal life, accompanied
by their dissection and histological study. In Botany, including
a similar course of three lectures a week upon a series of representative
plants: particular attention will be paid to the structure of the lower
forms not usually discussed in the text-books commonly in use.

Such courses will be found valuable to students who desire to
prepare themselves for farther study either here or elsewhere, or to
those who seek such introduction to the biological sciences as will
enable them to pursue them farther independently; to teachers who
desire to familiarize themselves with the laboratory methods now in
vogue; and to any whose knowledge of these subjects has been largely
derived from text-books, or who desire to review or extend their
practical knowledge.

Fee, payable on entering, for any two special courses taken
together, $45.00; for either, taken singly, $30,00; for either, if taken
in connection with the course in Histology for medical students, $20.00:
in each case inclusive of charges for laboratory supplies. The special
courses will begin July 6th, and continue six weeks.
