Moses at the Bush
'Twas while the bush was burning, Moses sawThe Present God! and heard His voice, I AM!
The God of Jacob, and of Abraham
Spake, in the wild, to him who gave the Law;
Quick as he heard he hid his face in awe!
Around him flared the red light on the rocks,
And downward shone upon his sleeping flocks.
He who from Pharaoh hasted to withdraw,
Leaving his palaces, and piles of art
Lit with aye-burning lamps, false idols' seat;
Though not, when in the wilderness he fed
His father's flocks, the great I AM to meet;
From human homes, and man's known ways apart,
Where burned the bush on Horeb's rocky head!
