On Seeing The Victoria Regia In Bloom, At The Garden of J. Fisk Allen Esq. July 22d, 1853.
Thou wondrous Flower! in which, on grander scaleThan in our northern clime, we see displayed
Creative Power, and Skill, that never fail;
By which the world and all therein were made;
With reverence on thy beauty would I gaze,
Inhale thy fragrance, and admire thy Leaf;
Whose wondrous size, and structure claim our praise,
Surpassing our conception and belief.

The type of thee in stem, and leaf, and flower,
In beauty, and in fragrance too is seen;
Displaying here the same Creative Power,
As where, on Amazon's gigantic stream,
Thou lift's thy head to greet the morning beam.
