TO INEZ DE GEORGIA,

ON PRESENTING ME WITH A PIONEY IN FULL BLOOM.

Oh! when time shall break the chain
That this precious gift doth bind
Round my beating heart again,
As mine arms around thee twined—

74

Will this same Pioney bloom
In thy fond remembrance, dear!
And re-thrill thee, when the tomb
Shall deny my presence here?
But perchance thy spirit knows
That this undiminished fire
Shall forbid our tombs to close,
Till our hopes are lifted higher.
For its brightness shall be given,
As when stars rejoin the sky,
To my beating heart, when heaven
Shall return my soul on high.
As yon pearly clouds that lie,
As my head upon thy breast,
As if angel's locks on high—
That can find no sweeter rest;
And like Nature's soft repose
On yon deep unruffled sea,
When life's chafing storms shall close—
Shall my spirit sleep with thee.
