BREATHINGS OF THE SOUL.

If a man die, shall he live again?—
Man of Uz.

Lord! in the shadow of thy wings,
Bowed in the light of heavenly things—
Fostered by thy redeeming care,
And knowing what thy glories are;
Let me not ask of thee in vain,
Shall not my spirit live again?
Lord! would it not be joy to me,
To know that it shall dwell with thee,
And all the kindred of its love,
In that bright holy land above?
For then these questionings were vain—
Shall not my spirit live again?
Are not my parents to be known
In that bright region round the throne?
Are not my brothers to be there?
And all my sisters as they are?
And are they not with thee to reign?
Shall not my spirit live again?
For, if the Lord's disciples knew
Both Moses and Elias too,
When on the mountain they were seen,
As if they had familiar been;
Why should these yearnings be in vain?
Shall not my spirit live again?

Lord! if the Shiloh had not died,
And if my soul were satisfied;
And if it were ordained to live
By any thing this world could give;
I then might ask of thee in vain,
Shall not my spirit live again?
But seeing that it cannot fill,
And knowing that it hungers still
For that which is to angels given,
To know the mysteries of heaven;
And feeling that to yearn is pain—
I know that it shall live again.
