In the State Library are thousands of Executive and other
papers recommending men for militia officers and other appointive
offices. From these may be learned the names of Caroline officers
from year to year. The following is taken from the collection
and shows names of men recommended for militia officers by the
county court of July, 1793, Captains: James Sutton, Geo. Terrell,
Henry Chiles, Thos. Miller, John White, Wm. Saunders, Sam'l
Norment, Daniel Turner, Reuben Chapman, Thos. Guy. Lieutenants:
Joseph Timberlake, Richard Willson, Reuben Broaddus,
Fred'k Phillips, Wm. Conner, John Carter, George Hampton,
Wm. Coghill, Thos. Burk, Joseph Sutton. Ensigns: Wm. Walker,
Thos. Kidd, Benj. Carter, James Samuel, Reuben Saunders,
James Coates, George Guy, Wm. Ellis, James Collins and James
Higgins.
