Creek, Franklin county, Va., February 19, 1893; s. Tazewell Tarleton and
Mary Susan (Motley) Wingfield; educated in public schools of Virginia,
Johnson Bible College of Tennessee, and Texas Christian University,
Fort Worth, Texas; special student in various institutions of higher
learning; m. Willo Irene Austin, of Rockingham county, N. C., August
19, 1913; ordained to the ministry (Disciples) November 10, 1912; pastorates
in Dallas, Tex.; Richmond, Va.; Baltimore, Md., and Bowling
Green, Va.; pastor of Thirtieth-Street Church (Disciples) of Newport
News, Va., since September 1, 1924; on lecture platform summers of
1917 and 1918; author of "The Strength of a Nation," "The Return to
Faith," "The Credentials of Christianity," "The Old South," "A
Parish in the Battlefields," "The Fate of Prophets," "The Midnight
Singers," "The Significance of Heraldry," and "Sermons"; contributor
to various religious, fraternal and historical journals; member Virginia
Historical Society, Southern Historical Society, National Historical
Society, Association for Preservation of Virginia Antiquities, State
Board of Virginia Christian Missionary Society, National Geographic
