THE MILITIA OF 1812

From June 18, 1812, when a declaration of war with Great
Britain was made by the United States, the County Militia was
frequently called out in Caroline and surrounding counties to
meet and expel the British, who were landing on the banks of
the Rappahannock river, making incursions into the county,
destroying private property and carrying off negroes. These
were dark days. The United States forces were crippled by the
bitter controversies raging between opposing political parties and,
as a result, lost many battles. The spirit of '76 was only a
memory. The gloom only began to lift when Andrew Jackson
won the splendid victory at New Orleans, which made him the
National hero and elected him President. When peace was
restored corn sold at ten dollars per barrel, wheat at three dollars
per bushel and other necessities accordingly. Speculation became
rife and capital reckless and when production exceeded the demand
and the loans, made on the basis of high prices were called
in, there was failure all over the country.
