MAHYNA:
the "Great Tradition." One of the TRADITIONAL schools of BUDDHISM. The origins of Mahyna are difficult to determine but lie somewhere between the first century B.C. and the first century A.D. As a religious system it has a universalist emphasis which gives a greater role to Lay-men than its main rival HNAYNA and, in doing so, the importance of COMPASSION is emphasized alongside WISDOM.
