HALEVY, Elie (1870-1937):
French historian and social philosopher whose work on English history led him to argue that METHODISM saved England from a REVOLUTION in 1815. His thesis, known as "the Halevy thesis" is similar to that of WEBER in emphasizing the role of ideas and religious convictions in shaping SOCIAL REALITY.
