[Scene ii.]

Lambskin: A sheppard crying who meets with Clott: a husbandman that is running as if halfe skard out of his witts.
Clott.
What? watry planet strooke? how now my lambskyn;
what makes thee change thy note: From yonder downe
thou didst soe warble with thy Oaten pipe
But t'other day, that in the vale beneath
where purled Lethes slides shee not forboar
but dauncing ore the pibles her way paued
stroue to fill vp the consort, whiles yon groue
sent Eccho to return thy musick double
The poplers leaf did not ther grow but dance
Friskin My mare as rauisht with such loud
and vnaccustomed harmony grew wilde
and made my plough soe caper after her
when shee crost baukes that all the feild did wonder
The stiller musick of my whistle had
noe power att all to charme her tame againe.
Tell me I prithe what new change is this?

Lambskin.
O, then, was then, and now is now, deare clott:
this land was soe farr blest with gouernours
that euery swayne might safely pipe and daunce
whilst there was noe ayre breathd, but that of peace.

Sithence, through I know not what confusion
such differences are risen ore the whole
that wee who neuer wont to feare a foe
Now of our selues make our selues enemies
soe that ther is such pressing vpp and downe
for souldiers (a profession I hate,
although I neuer tride its sower to me:)
That whereas I was wont to watch my flock
to keepe them from the woolfe with Vampus

(his dogg

heer

now I want one to keepe and shend my selfe
from the Iawes of the Constable—as bad

Clott:
Is that all gentle Lambskin? heer are thickets
by natures bountie to secure our harmes
till all be ouer; I confesse I sweate
with runing from a Bossolder euen now
that sayd I must to the Lieutennants goe:
thought I, Ile sooner to the gallowes, then
be prest to fight gainst my owne countrymen

Lambskin.
Twas worthily resolud, my feares doe wast
in being with thee, letts lurke till all be past

Exeunt.
