IF LOVE MIGHT LAST.

If Love might last for ever,
And Beauty keep her youth,
Fond hearts now forced to sever
Should 'scape remorse and ruth:
If Love might last for ever,
And Beauty keep her youth.
If Love's sole name were Pleasure,
And Beauty were not vain,
Content might mete its measure,
And tears be sweet as rain:
If Love knew only pleasure,
And Beauty were not vain.
If Beauty bloom'd for ever,
And Love were constant Truth,
Or Love well-dower'd Endeavour,
And Beauty queenly Youth,—
Love then would love for ever,
And Beauty wed with Truth.
