NEW YEAR.

[I ask not for the cloud and fire]

“And He said, My presence shall go with thee.”—Ex. xxxiii. 14.

I ask not for the cloud and fire,
To tell me when and where to move;
All that I pray for and desire
Is grace and wisdom from above.
Shew, Lord, the path that I should tread;
Oh, go before me on the way;
By Thy good hand would I be lead,
Onward and upward, day by day.

[Each heart must own, each tongue declare]

“All Thy works shall praise Thee, O Lord.”—Psalm exlv. 10.

Each heart must own, each tongue declare
Thy works, O Lord, are wondrous fair;
For proofs are seen in every place
Of wisdom, goodness, love, and grace.
The circling months, the changing years,
Each with a varying grace appears;
And Thou dost keep the old world new
With blessings of the sun and dew.

[Lord, in Thy holy name we raise]

“Thou crownest the year with Thy goodness.”—Psalm lxv. 11.

Lord, in Thy holy name we raise,
With thankful heart and grateful tongue,
Our tribute of adoring praise,
Our due and joyful New Year's song.
We owe it to Thy tender grace
That circling months come rolling round,
That seasons followed in their place,
And now the year with goodness crown'd.

[O Lord, my God, to Thy dear arms I flee]

“I flee unto Thee to hide me.”—Psalm cxliii. 9.

O Lord, my God, to Thy dear arms I flee,
A hiding place for all that need, Thou art;
And there is room, this New Year's Day, for me
Within the tender foldings of Thy heart.
So come I, like a poor belated dove,
Ruffled and torn by beating winds and rain,
To seek a shelter in Thine ark of love,
And find myself at rest and home again.

[Our Refuge is th' eternal God]

“The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the ever-lasting arms.”—Deuteronomy xxxiii. 27.

Our Refuge is th' eternal God;
Beneath are everlasting arms;
His love, a shield both strong and broad
Defends from all that tempts or harms.
Though care at times our portion be,
The needful grace he will impart,
If only to His arms we flee,
And seek a shelter in His heart.

[My fresh springs are in Thee alone]

“All my fresh springs shall be in Thee.”—Psalm lxvii. 7.

My fresh springs are in Thee alone,
O Christ, the fount of life and love;
The streams that issue from Thy throne,
Bear richest blessings from above.
Thy great surpassing love be mine,
Grace for the way Thy saints have trod,
Light from Thy face on me to shine,
And crowning all, the peace of God.
