CHRISTMAS.

[He comes, He comes, our longing souls to gladden]

“He hath sent me to heal the broken-hearted.”—Luke iv. 18.

He comes, He comes, our longing souls to gladden,
To bring the dawn of light to weary eyes;
To vanquish sin, and ills the heart that sadden,
To turn to songs our sorrows and our sighs.
He comes to dry the eyes all dim with weeping,
To banish evil, make an end of strife,
To give to those who sow in tears, their reaping,—
The golden harvest sheaves of light and life.
He comes! He comes!

[Break forth, ye heavens, in singing]

“Break forth into singing.........for the Lord hath redeemed Jacob, and glorified Himself in Israel.”—Isaiah xliv. 23.

Break forth, ye heavens, in singing,
O floods, lift up your voice;
Christ comes salvation bringing,
Rejoice, O men, rejoice!
Tell out, tell out the story,
Proclaim the Saviour's birth,
Until the Saviour's glory
Shall cover all the earth.

[See gliding through the skies a star]

“When they had heard the king, they departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was.”—Matthew ii. 9.

See gliding through the skies a star
Which floods the world with light,
And guides the wise men from afar,
Drawn by the wondrous sight.
It pauses o'er the manger low,
Where sleeps the new-born child,
In whom God manifest is seen,
Son of the Virgin mild.

[Christ brings to men salvation]

“For unto you is born this day in the city of David, a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.”—Luke ii. 11.

Christ brings to men salvation;
Let all their off' rings lay,
In deepest adoration,
Low at His feet this day.
We praise our King most holy—
Our God, our all in all,
Who comes, the meek and lowly,
To save us from the fall.

[Christ is born! and tuneful voices]

“And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds.”—Luke ii. 18.

Christ is born! and tuneful voices
Sound along the purple skies;
And the world in light rejoices
As the Morning Star doth rise.
“Glory in the highest, Glory!”
Holy angels sing with joy;
And we catch the wondrous story,
“Glory be to God on high!”

[“Good will to men, and peace on earth”]

“Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.”—Luke ii. 14.

“Good will to men, and peace on earth”
Unto the world's remotest bound,
Is now secured through Jesus' birth
Whilst praises far and wide resound.
Gladly we worship and adore
Him—the Loving, True, and Strong:
Bless His name for evermore,
Raise the anthem, sing the song.
