LOVE'S BIRTH |
The Collected Poems of Lord De Tabley | ||
LOVE'S BIRTH
When Love, before whose planet birth,
The sacred Paphian pinewoods smiled;
Then roses spread the forest earth
And blue-bells gleamed on mountain wild.
The sacred Paphian pinewoods smiled;
Then roses spread the forest earth
And blue-bells gleamed on mountain wild.
The air grew mild: the ocean floor
Without one crisping ripple lay.
In calm the breaker lapped the shore,
Or washed the ledges of the bay.
Without one crisping ripple lay.
In calm the breaker lapped the shore,
Or washed the ledges of the bay.
But, sweet and deep, transcendent rest
Suffused the violet-tinted sea.
And in the richly clouded west
The purple faded silently.
Suffused the violet-tinted sea.
And in the richly clouded west
The purple faded silently.
