SCARECROWS.

Do you hear his old bones rattling
And the knocking of his knees?
It's not very easy battling
With such a boisterous breeze.
His rags have their mockery heightened
By a far too respectable hat—
Surely my Willie's not frightened
At such a scarecrow as that?
Not he; he's not so silly;
He thinks it a capital joke—
Have you any courage, my Willie,
To spare for us older folk?
For we, who are so much bigger
And stronger and wiser than you,
Might cut a ridiculous figure
If our cowardice you knew.
There are scarecrows have dominion
Over our hearts so small;
There's one called Public Opinion
About the worst of them all.
It frowns on us all, man and woman,
And shakes its wise head of wood
Whene'er we do anything human
Or try to do anything good.
