Provost Consults Expert
On Library Expansion

By DEBBY DENNO

Keyes Metcalf, Librarian Emeritus of
Harvard, has recently been consulted by
Provost David Shannon in order to supply
outside advice as to the expansion of the
undergraduate library at the University.

Mr. Metcalf is an outstanding
consultant of libraries, and will assist in
making recommendations for the
financing, the location, and the structure of the
library according to Mr. Shannon. He further
stated that a separate undergraduate library is
now in the process of planning in order to meet
increasing needs.

Moving the library to Clark Hall,
constructing a new building between Alderman
Library and Peabody Hall, and extending
Alderman Library at the west end were all
possibilities for the provision of an
undergraduate library.

Mr. Shannon commented that Mr. Metcalf
has favored the construction of a new building,
and that if finances were available, they would
have both an extension and a new building.

In order to acquire undergraduate opinions
as to the purpose of the library, students will be
polled, stated Edward Kolodziej, Associate
Professor of Government and the Chairman of
the University Library Committee. "We want to
know the reasons why students use the library
in order to better serve their needs."

The expansion has been in the process of
being examined by the committee for two or
three years, Kolodziej further commented. The
committee meets in full assembly once a
month, and various subcommittees meet
periodically, when they feel it is necessary. The
next meeting will be held on Monday,
November 28.

"It will be a long way down the road before
construction," according to Mr. Shannon.
"Money, soil testing, and architecture all have
to be considered.
