Skull & Keys Selects Burton,
Dailey For Judiciary Posts

In its caucus last night the
Sceptre Society chose Bob Card and
George Brown as candidates for the
Judiciary Committee and Steve
Jacobs, Joel Gardner, and Dan
Lyons, Joel Gardener, and Steve
Jacob as candidates for the Student
Council. Mr. Card was chosen on the
first ballot with 109 votes, while Mr.
Brown gathered 96 votes in a runoff
to defeat Jim Doilney, who received
55 votes.

The Student Council candidates
were decided in one ballot. Mr.
Jacob received 73 votes, Mr.
Gardener 65 votes, Mr. Lyons 58
votes, and Arnold Golden 42 votes.

In his campaign speech Mr.
Doilney cited the Judiciary
Committee as an important tool in
achieving student power and said, "I
would like to see the Judiciary
Committee, not the Administration,
be the final court of appeal in
student affairs. As long as the
Administration is in this final
position, student power is only
token."

"The Judiciary Committee needs
Geritol," declared Mr. Brown in his
speech to the society. He then cited
the need for reform in the Judiciary
Committee's trial, its penalties, and
framework."

After pointing out the need for
strength and reform in the Judiciary
Committee, Mr. Card said, "A
member of the Judiciary serves one
semester as an investigator and one
as a judge. I promise to be a thorough
investigator and an impartial judge.

Dan Lyons, the only second-year
man who succeeded in becoming a
candidate for the Student Council,
told the caucus, "Many people use
the Student Council as a stepping
stone. However, I will graduate from
the University in three years and for
me the Student Council is an end,
not a mean."

Steve Jacobs was one of the few
candidates to speak out in favor of
the Student Council being receptive
to the needs of first-year men. He
also said, "The Student Council
must contain itself to pertinent
issues and must push to place
students on administrative
committees."

Pointing out the new challenge to
the political societies in the form of
the University Party, Joel Gardener
said, "I call for progressive and
responsive leadership at the
University."
