EXTREME OF VICE.
Paymaster Cunningham astonished every body to-day by
boldly reading the following six lines from a copy of Pope's
Essay on Man:—
“Vice is a monster of such frightful mien,
That to be hated needs but to be seen:—
But seen too oft—familiar with its face
We first endure, then pity—then embrace:—
But where's the extreme of vice? 'twas ne'er agreed.
Ask where's the North—in York 'tis on the Tweed.”

We first endure, then pity—then embrace:—

Ask where's the North—in York 'tis on the Tweed.”
