ADMISSIONS FOR 1961-1962

The Chancellor presented a detailed report on the current status of admissions to Mary Washington
College for 1961-1962. He said that extreme care was being taken to be sure that fully qualified
Virginia students who applied before 1 February 1961 would be admitted in September 1961. As a part
of his discussion, he took note of the letter addressed to the Rector, with copies to each Visitor,
dated 5 April 1961, from Mr. Harrison Mann, a member of the House of Delegates from Arlington County,
in which Mr. Mann criticized the administration of the admissions program at Mary Washington College.
Mr. Mann's chief point of complaint was that Mary Washington College, through a deliberate policy of
not requesting new dormitories, had restricted its enrollment, with the result that qualified Virginia
students could not gain entrance to the College. The Chancellor reported in detail on the statement
by Mr. Mann and pointed out that fully qualified Virginia students who applied before 1 February of
each year would be admitted to the College.

Following the Chancellor's presentation, a general discussion ensued as to the steps to be taken
to answer Mr. Mann's criticism. After the discussion, the following resolution was adopted

RESOLVED by the Board of Visitors of The Rector and Visitors of the University of Virginia that
the letter by Harrison Mann directed to the Rector of the University and dated 5 April 1961, be and it
is hereby referred to the Mary Washington College Committee which, with the assistance of the President
and the Chancellor of Mary Washington College, is hereby directed to report to the Board on the matter
at the next meeting in June.
